I do know when I first got interested in technical things. I was then a little boy about 3
years old when the light bulb in the flashlight fascinated me. Why does it turn on and off, I wondered. Of course,
I didn't know the answer then. But that opened a whole new world for me.
We had an old phonograph which we used to play old records. By accident, I made it fall from
the table. I was then about 10 years old. I was so scared to get a scolding so I tried to repair it as best I
could. I couldn't get it working and I got a scolding but I didn't mind because I discovered many interesting things
inside that old phonograph. I found a new hobby - that of "tinkering". Whenever I get the chance, I would "tinker"
inside the bowels of this old phonograph. Then our old radio stopped working and I got to tinker inside it too. As
the years went by, I became good at tinkering. I was able to repair almost anything I set my heart to - radios,
stereos, and later, anything that pertains to electronics.
I was already working at the Civil Service Commission in 1995 when I performed a personnel audit
at the National Telecommunications Commission office in Tacloban City. I got to talking to the personnel there about
radios and other forms of telecommunications. The idea of becoming a ham radio operator appealed to me. I applied
for a license from the NTC, passed it and was assigned the call sign DU5AOK. Vilma, my very supportive wife, became
a ham radio operator too. Her call sign is DW5VIE. I taught my children how to operate our radio transmitters
and receivers (All of them are licensed ham radio operators already: Ian, DW5CSC; Kienne, DY5KC; Kyla, DY5KLA). For
many years now, radios have become a necessary part of our lives. :)
My Present...
I am still working at the Civil Service Commission but this time as head of one of its Field
Offices. I constantly travel from place to place. Although I have a reliable cellphone now, I still travel
with my trusty old handheld radio. It keeps me in touch with other ham radio operators whom I can always count on during
emergencies.
Lately though, I'm into a new hobby - firing live bullets in a firing range. My world
has expanded. I've made new friends especially among our local enforcement officers.
By the way...
